People in recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), also known as post-concussion syndrome, or who have cognitive issues due to other health conditions, often experience:
- Frustration with their limitations
- Anxiety over lost abilities
- Doubt and fear about the future
- Decreased energy and stamina, resulting in possible losses of jobs, physical abilities, and ability to play or relax with their families
- Changes in relationships, jobs, and financial status
In some cases, psychotherapy is appropriate to overcome significant depression or anxiety. In many other cases, coaching can help through:
- First recognizing that life has changed and determining and acknowledging the current situation
- Identifying current strengths, resources, and supports
- Identifying potential strengths, resources, and supports to develop
- Creating structure for achieving goals
- Providing accountability for working within that structure
- Making referrals to other services or professionals as appropriate
